According to ynguldyn on Bimmerpost.
"All re-engined F3x models will get new designations:
Model name change for the re-engined F3x: 328i (N20) -> 330i (B48), 335i (N55) -> 340i (B58).
4-cyl B48 engine will have 330i/430i designation instead of 328i/428i
6-cyl B58 engine will have 340i/440i designation instead of 335i/435i.
PHEV F30 will come as 330e, not 328e."

Im sorry, I just cant anymore.
This, plus the fact that your 320i with M-Sport pack will have the same steering wheel as the $130K M6 Grandcoupe is baffling.
Also, Who are they designing the GranCoupe 4 series for? Someone who want practicallity of a hatchback. But actually doesent. Who like the looks of a tall wagon, but actually doesent. And who wants a 3 series. But actually doesn't.
Then, the fake sound. FAKE SOUND. How pathetic your engine has to sound if you have to make the equivalent of playing a voicenote of a nice sounding car through the speakers. Ill then download Ferraris of 1970s Album on itunes and play it all day long.
Oh, BMW I still dont fully hate you thanks to the wonderlust that is the 2 series. But you're close.

Why don't they just call every model the 399i and be done with it?

Good points.
The numbers have become so arbitrary now that I just don't care enough to keep track. But BMW is a very, very good marketing company—there's probably data that says the casual BMW "buyer" (lessee) is not going to go gearhead-deep in determining what the car has under the hood, etc. They're going to know the bigger number is "better," go for the other options they want, and sign the contract. Hopefully they'll drive it first.
There's just a little bit of sleight-of-hand there, where it's like BMW is saying, "don't worry your little head about what powerplant we put in here, just leave that to us." I personally find that annoying, but I doubt the majority of their customers do these days.
That said, I still like some of their cars, I'm just not a fan of some of their priorities.

If they are gong to go with higher number=better why not have the 4cyl be a 340, and the 6 be a 360. At least that would kinda make since.

All you say is correct. BMW knows that their owners care for badge on the front, and having the higher number at the back. And thats alright since they make money out of it. I really think it is important to know them though. I also like some cars (X6M even) but the way they took things is too far from what I thought they did. Its like a strategy from Hyundai, IMHO.

Should be 316, 320, and 330. I guess turbos add displacement.

It'll be better than this transitional thing they have going right now. All you have to do is let go of the numbers being directly tied to displacement. With the current engine changes, multiple versions of the 2.0L, etc., it's impossible to keep to that rule. So now the 3xx numbers will simply mean the "tier" of engine. The higher the number, the more powerful the engine.
Let's also keep in mind BMW isn't the pioneering villain here. Look at the spec sheet for the current Mercedes C class. C250=1.8L, C300=3.5L, C350=3.5L. It's just that one by one, the alpha-numeric-using car companies are realizing it's not practical to tie the numbers to displacement.
What would be kinda cool is to tie the model number to horsepower. 320i=approx. 200hp, 325i=250hp, 330i=300hp.

I actually like the 4 series Gran coupé! It looks better than the 3 series... 4 doors + the liftback is usefull with kids (otherwise I'd get a 2 series)...
Going with roused numbers makes sense... It didn't make any that the numbers didn't fit the engine... Now, simply, bigger number is better... Might not ne modified as much in the future!
But frack that fake engine noise... How awefull that is!!

I dont know, I think I am much stuck in what was BMW. Still, I also dislike the fact of the fake noise. I mean, the last generation of that car was known for its own noise!
